Best 17 HMR Scope

image_16-33-06_07115_20-08-2016There are many different scopes that you can buy for the 17 HMR rifle, some vary in price and some in quality. In this article, you will find 5 17 HMR scope reviews to help you find your best scope for the 17 HMR.

1. Nikon ProStaff RiflescopeNikon ProStaff Riflescope

This scope features a fully multicoated optical system with 98% light transmission, which allows the clearest view possible due to the crystal clear lens, In its turn, this allows you to use the rifle more efficiently.

This particular scope includes a 40mm objective lens and has a 3 to 9x magnification. The scope is also waterproof and  nitrogen-filled, as well as has a sealed outer shell. This means you will be able to use the scope under any weather conditions, such as fog and rain, without risking to damage the scope itself.

The eyepiece is very quick to focus and it is 12.4 inches long. It also has 3.6 inches of eye relief. Even down to the design, the scope is very well-manufactured, the casing around the lens is matte black, which makes it look very sleek, clean and professional. The product also isn’t too expensive, especially when you consider the superb quality of this scope.

2. Simmons ProTarget TruPlex RiflescopeSimmons ProTarget TruPlex Riflescope

This scope is very similar to the Nikon ProStaff in terms of how it works and its design. This scope has a magnification of 3x to 9x and a 40mm objective lens, just like the Nikon Prostaff has. The scope is also very similar to the other model in terms of its design, too: the outer shell is matte black, which means that this scope will slightly resemble the Nikon ProStaff.

However, despite the similarities, there still are differences. The company claims that the materials used to manufacture the scope have been tested very thoroughly and extensively to ensure that the scope is very durable and will last for a long time. The lens of the scope is also very clear and has a very steady zoom, allowing you to take a good aim.

The lens will work very well in poor lighting conditions and under harsh weather. It also features finger-tip adjustable turrets and a side focus. This scope is also very easy to set up and is almost a perfect match for the 17 HMR. However, this scope does have some downsides, like the fact that it is very heavy and bulky. Somehow, the side focus adds a lot of weight to the scope and in general, it’s just a bit awkward to lift and carry around, so it’s probably not ideal if you are planning on traveling with this scope. It was also pretty difficult to see through the lens properly if the scope wasn’t stationary or sitting completely straight which was frustrating. Although overall, it is still very similar to the Nikon one and slightly cheaper in price. If you are not really too fussed about this scope being too heavy then I would say that it is worth a try as the price isn’t too high.

It is difficult to see through the lens properly if the scope isn’t stationary or sitting completely straight. In general, it is still very similar to the Nikon Prostaff and slightly cheaper. If you don’t worry about this scope being too heavy, then I would say it is worth a try as the price isn’t too high.

3. Leupold Waterproof RiflescopeLeupold Waterproof Riflescope

The Leupold riflescope is a good quality scope. This scope will probably be best for you if you use the rifle outdoors in bad weather conditions. The case enclosing the lens is filled with nitrogen, which means that it is resistant to fog and water. The nitrogen also increases the durability of the scope, which is a great bonus.

It has finger-adjustable dials that allow fast and convenient zeroing and adjustments. The scope also has a magnification of 3-9x and you can easily adjust the focus. The glass on the lens is also extremely clear and bright, as well as is multi-coated. The scope isn’t too heavy, which can make it appear not durable enough. Don’t be deceived by the weight, even though the scope feels light enough to be easily broken by a fall, it is still durable. Perhaps, not as durable as you would expect from Leupold, but durable nevertheless.

The price is also quite high, but not for the quality of the scope and the brand. Despite the scope feeling a little bit light and flimsy, the pros definitely outweigh the cons on this one. The outstanding quality of the lens is just a single factor that should make you want to purchase this scope.

4. BSA Sweet 17 RiflescopeBSA Sweet 17 Riflescope

This scope is different from the 3 other previous scopes because this one has a larger magnification. It also has a magnification of 3-12x rather than 3-9x like the previous ones. The scope is waterproof and fog proof, and even shockproof, which means it shouldn’t shatter and break if you happen to accidentally drop it.

It is a perfect fit for the 17HMR and the elevation turret is made for it. The scope allows very accurate aiming, the low price is also a huge bonus.  However, a lesser price means more drawbacks. Although this scope does have a magnification of 3-12x, if the scope is zoomed all the way in, the image becomes blurry and you are unable to see any details. This is not ideal if you are hunting small animals. It is also very difficult to mount.

Anyway, even though this scope does have its difficulties, you definitely get what you pay for. The lens, in general, is very clear, it just happens to go completely blurry once it is zoomed all the way in, which makes super-extra magnification completely useless. Overall, considering the price, this is a decent scope.

5. BARSKA RiflescopeBARSKA Riflescope

This riflescope has a magnification of 6-18x and a 40mm objective lens. The scope is water- and fog-proof so it can be used in different weather conditions, and it also has a rigid shockproof construction. This means that the scope should be very durable and immune to shattering if you accidentally drop it, as well as to water damage. You can also use the scope in the worst weather conditions and still be able to use the rifle and see through the scope efficiently.

The riflescope is also specifically engineered for a 17mm rifle, meaning that it will work very well with the 17 HMR. The lens is extremely clear and features an adjustable objective lens for parallax correction. The eye relief of this scope, however, isn’t the greatest, but it is its only drawback. Aside from this, this scope is affordable, although the quality is far from the greatest so if you are looking for a really good quality scope, you would probably be better off spending a little more money for better quality.

To conclude, all of the scopes in this article are compatible with the 17 HMR and will work how they are intended to work, although some may be more efficient than others.

If you are purchasing a scope for a beginner or you are a beginner yourself, you might want to consider spending less money and purchase the BSA riflescope. It allows a very good aim and is probably best suited for a beginner, even though the magnification power isn’t outstanding. However, if you are a professional or are purchasing a scope for a professional, you may want to consider spending a little more money and purchase a more advanced, higher quality scope. The Leupold and the Nikon scopes are both probably high-quality scopes on this list. They are constructed from good quality materials and manufactured by trusted brands. As far as magnification goes, they do not have the highest ratings, but for simple deer hunting, the 3-9x magnification is really all you need, any more would be simply unnecessary. The lenses on both of those scopes are very crisp and clear and are ideal if you can afford to spend a little extra money on a riflescope.image_16-32-35_07113_20-08-2016

As far as durability goes, all of the scopes here are extremely durable. Most of them are fog- and water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about any of them breaking or being damaged by water due to the weather.

However, not all of them are shockproof, so you might want to consider that when deciding which scope is best suited for you. The Leupold feels quite light which makes it feel less durable, but the others are fairly heavy, which makes them feel quite robust. Overall, all of these scopes are perfectly suitable for the 17 HMR. It really depends on how much you are willing to spend and what kind of quality you want from a riflescope.
